Reading of your vision struck great fear into my heart, for I believe
I have seen the creature of your nightmare and it was all too real.
Several days ago, needing a break from my studies, I decided to visit
the lily pond. I find that the croaking of the frogs clears my mind
and I'm making a hobby of studying the cave maha one can frequently see
there. While I was passing through North Wood, I had an unfortunate
accident involving a starbuck and several large vermin. I was not
alarmed, I've grown quite accustomed to such accidents in my 9 months
in the islands. I had fallen by the stream that flows from the pond, a
well traveled area, and I expected rescue in due course. That was not
to be.
I had just given a yell for help when the wraith appeared beside me.
It was much as you described it, a floating dark cloaked figure.
Within the hood was darkness, pierced only by the glowing red coals of
its eyes. "So" it said, "Some scraps." The voice was like ice, and
chilled me to my soul. The mystic in me wanted to interrogate it, to
know what it was and what it wanted. But I was paralyzed with fear and
could only watch in dumbstruck horror as it bound my legs with a chain
and prepared to drag me off. The creature dragged me only a short
distance when we were suddenly in another place. I did not recognize
it but I believe that it was the island of Dol'Noth. The creature then
left, promising to return in time for supper. There was a beach to my
south, I could hear the waves. There were also rock outcroppings to
north and about a half dozen death vermin ran in and out amongst them.
I took a few seconds to burn the area into my memory, then, seeing no
hope of rescue and fearing the creatures return, I departed.
I have since learned from the writings of other exiles that the
creature I encountered was Qual. Perhaps there is some connection to
the stream, as it was the same one beside which you slept. I know not
what it wants, besides dinner, but if it is indeed connected to the
soulglasses, then it can only mean the destruction of our island home.
We must share what we know of this foul creature and if necessary, seek
the means of its defeat.
If you wish to share any knowledge of this creature or what plans it
may have, I can frequently be found around town. I have also rented
box 1531 at the Puddleby post office.
